In the present study, rue compared the effects on distal esophageal pH of omeprazole cap. (20 mg, q.d and b.i.d), famotidine tb (40 mg, b.i.d), cisapride tb (10 mg, q.i.d) and Gaviscon tb (q.i.d) in 50 patients with acid gastroesophageal reflux disease. Forty-four-hour ambulatory pH monitoring were performed in similar standardized conditions. After the basal 24 h pH measurement pH recording was repeated simultaneously with drug administration. Compared with the pretreatment results, omeprazole (20 mg, q.d and b.i.d) and famotidine reduced the following three important pH parameters: percent time with esophageal pH <4, total number of gastroesophageal reflux episodes and number of nocturnal reflux episodes. Omeprazole 20 mg b.i.d was the most effective drug regimen. Results of famotidine and omeprazole (20 mg, q.d) were similar. Only one pH parameter (number of total reflux episodes) was decreased significantly in patients treated with Gaviscon. Cisapride 10 mg q.i.d did not produce a significant improvement in any of the pH parameters.
