ABSTRACT
Perthes disease is idiopathic avascular necrosis of the femoral head. It is an important cause of the pediatric hip pain and limp. Increased sclerosis and flattening of the femoral head can be observed in the early phase on plain radiographs. Fragmentation, collapse and subluxation of the femoral head, and metaphyseal cysts can be detected during follow-ups. Magnetic resonance imaging is very sensitive for the visualization of the synovitis, bone marrow edema and necrosis at the onset of the disease. Evaluation of the articular cartilage, fragmentation, perfusion and containment of the head can also be evaluated. Scintigraphy gives information about recanalization and revascularization process in the femoral head. These findings could help surgeons during the prediction of the prognosis. Arthrography is a dynamic method for the evaluation of hip joint congruency. Computed tomography can be used for the analysis of the structure of proximal femur, acetabulum and hip joint congruency.
