We investigated the effects of gliclazide on erythrocyte GSH, GSHPx and MDA in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In both diabetic groups, mean plasma GSH levels were lower than the control levels (OAD group: 35.31 ± 7.01 mg/100 ml hemolyzate, Diabetic group: 62.18 ± 16.07 mg/100 ml hemolyzate, control group: 101.8 ± 12.9 mg/100 ml hemolyzate). However; GSHPx and MDA levels of OAD group and of diabetic group were:higher than control group (GSHPx levels, 52 ± 3.5 U/gHb, 60 ± 3.9 U/gHb, 45 ± 3.7 U/gHb and MDA levels, 744.8 ± 151.3 nmol/gHb, 1044.66 ± 241.29 nmol/gHb, 491 ± 113 nmol/gHb, respectively). Consequently, it was seen that gliclazide depressed the lipid peroxidation and it call be asserted that it causes more decrease in glutathione levels.
