Abstract
Intoxications represent a significant portion of emergency cases and include not only companion animals but also exotic animal species. Even though poisoning in exotic animals is
less common than in small animals clinically, it is essential to know the potentially toxic
substances or their sources and how to manage the toxicities when they occur as an emergency. Also, it is crucial for veterinarians to educate exotic animal caretakers to decrease
potential hazard exposures within the environment or from the diet. Moreover, veterinarians
should be aware of the treatment of non-traditional pet species to avoid iatrogenic intoxication or contraindications with pharmaceutics. Intoxications in exotic species should be included as a differential diagnosis in any veterinary species presenting with acute mortality.
In a toxicological emergency, there are many treatment steps like decontamination, supportive care, enhanced elimination, and specific antidote treatment. The most successful treatment for intoxication is prevention. Among exotic animals, many physiological and anatomical differences make thing difficult, a slogan is always there: treat the patient, not the
poison. In this oral presentation, we aimed to give information about poisoning and treatment principles that may be encountered in exotic animals.
