Özet

In this study breed perceptions of dog owners at the time of acquisition process was investigated. For this purpose, a questionnaire based study was conducted among the members of the Dog Breeds and Cynology Federation of Turkey. Five hundred and eighty-one respondents’ answers were accepted as the material of this study. Dog breeds were classified considering their size, temperament and function. In order to determine which perceptions do the dog owners have at the time of dog acquisition Principal Component Analysis was conducted. As a result of analysis, four components were obtained: breed characteristics, social influence, adaptation ability and working expectation from the dog. In order to determine the relationship between owners perceptions and demographics and dog related factors (size, temperament and function) multiple linear regression analysis was conducted. As a result of the study it was determined that dog related factors were a better predictors than owners’ demographics in order to predict owners’ perceptions at the time of dog acquisition. Owners who concern the breed characteristics of the dog were tend to have dominant dogs and less likely to have small and accompaniment dogs. Owners who concern the social influence tend to own hunting dogs and less likely to have small dogs. Owners who concern the adaptation ability of the dog less likely to have medium-sized and guarding dogs and owners who concerned the working expectation of the dog were tend to have dominant, hunting, guarding and sporting dogs while they less concerned to have small and medium sized dogs. In conclusion, this study would give some idea on the topic of what perceptions do the dog owners have when making their breed choices and what are the factors that effects on their perceptions. We believe this study would help to decrease relinquishment of dogs which caused by mismatches between dog and dog owner.
