    Dear Özlem Özer Tuğal ,

We would like to invite you to a festival/workshop/symposium this next December 19, 2021 - December 26, 2022  in Nakorn Ratchasima Province. It is about four hours northeast of Bangkok Thailand by bus van or train. You are invited.

This is in some sense 3 separate events, but each will bring together ceramic artists from around the world, ceramic and other artists from across Thailand, and the local potters and artists of Dankwian Village.

Dankwian is a traditional pottery making village that transformed itself into village that makes decorative ceramics, carved and sculpted pots, hand-pressed tile, bas relief murals, jewelry and free standing sculpture. There is little glaze, and lot of cold finishing. Almost all of the work is fired in anagama style wood kilns to low temperature, but the cone 6-8 hard fired traditional ware is being made too.

The first event is a workshop in the village where we will make pots, help load and fire kilns and unload kilns. The plan is to have kilns in each stage of production and firing so that people can experience the whole cycle without spending weeks at it. We would like to have people spend significant time making work in the same workshops getting to know each other. We want to develop long term connections between Dankwian and International clayers.

The second event is a conference. We are planning talks on history of pottery in Dankwian, Thailand, and Southeast Asia, talks on some specific art historical topics, a few technical talks and talks by artists including you.

The third event is a group of public events in the city for residents. This will likely include some performance artists and music, but also pot and sculpture making, and artist slide shows. There will be several exhibitions. I hope everyone can fit some work into their suitcases for the exhibitions.

Arrangements have not been discussed for this yet, but we plan to take a trip to Phimai to see the Khmer period temple and see the National Museum in Phimai. I also want to make sure that we get to the nearby silk weaving village and bronze casting location. The museum of Professor Tawee Ratjanikorn, a National Artist of Thailand is a must see and in town. There are some smaller ceramic producing areas that would be nice to get to as well.

We believe that we have funding for all in-country expenses including transportation  from Bangkok to Dankwian and back, food and lodging from a business promotion organization.

We are all hoping for vaccination to be widespread and effective by December. December is a good month to be in Thailand with temperatures averaging between 26˚C -31˚C or 71˚F - 89˚F.

Unfortunately, time is short. For some of our funding we need some indication of interest from across the globe. None of this is an obligation but we would appreciate knowing if you:

    1. are coming
    2. plan to come
    3. are considering coming

    4. can't come.

A short sentence or two would be sufficient.

We could also use two or three medium sized images of your work, a bio, and if possible a short resume,  if you plan to come. Feel free to ask me or Suwanee questions about the event.

Thank you, we hope to see you in Thailand. I am including links to my video on Dankwian pot making and images of the village I have posted to Facebook.
